Born in 2007, German-Mexican pianist Alejandro González Gerwig, a student of Fabian Müller and highly regarded by star pianists Till Fellner, Alexandre Tharaud and Pascal Rogé, is one of the most versatile pianists of his generation. He impresses audiences with his exceptional musical maturity and brings a distinctive personal voice to the instrument. In his concerts, he moves listeners with his playing, described as “both noble and passionate” (Stefan Keim, Artistic Director of the Carl Dörken Foundation).

He stands out for his wide-ranging repertoire, extending well beyond the most frequently performed piano works, and for his sophisticated programming. First prizes at numerous competitions and television appearances—including the Beethoven Night celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, alongside the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and star violinist Daniel Hope—have earned him recognition well beyond his local region from an early age.

Alejandro began playing the piano at the remarkably young age of three, studying with his parents, Christine Gerwig and Efraín González, both concert pianists and piano pedagogues. In the winter semester of 2019/20, he joined the Pre-College programme at the University of Music and Dance Cologne, where he studied with Professor Fabio Bidini. At just 16, he passed the entrance examination for the University of Music and Dance Cologne in June 2023 and has been pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree with Professor Fabian Müller since the winter semester of 2023/24.

Alejandro has won first prizes at several prestigious competitions, including Beethoven Bonnensis in 2021, where he became the first competitor in the history of the competition to win both the Solo Prize and the Beethoven Prize; the Bechstein Foundation Piano Solo Competition in 2022; the German National Competition Jugend musiziert in 2023; and the Westphalian Van Bremen Piano Competition, where he also received the Special Ligeti Prize. In September 2026, he won his first international prize in a professional competition at MozArte Aachen, competing as the youngest participant.

Since 2024, Alejandro has been a scholarship holder of the Werner Richard – Carl Dörken Foundation, which also awarded him a concert scholarship in June 2026. He is additionally a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. He has participated in masterclasses in Málaga, Nice, Brescia, Bergen and Flaine in the French Alps, receiving valuable artistic inspiration from distinguished musicians including Till Fellner, Pascal Rogé, Leif Ove Andsnes, Alexandre Tharaud, Alexandre Kantorow, Julien Libeer, Anthony Spiri, Stefan Irmer, Polina Leschenko and Zlata Chochieva.

Known as the “Bonn Beethoven”, Alejandro performed on 16 December 2020 at the Beethoven Night presented by the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The gala was broadcast live on WDR 3 and streamed on MagentaTV, receiving more than two million views.

At the age of eleven, he made his orchestral debut performing Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos alongside his parents and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco, conducted by Ricardo Casero. In March 2022, he made his solo debut with Grieg’s Piano Concerto, performing with the Bergische Symphoniker under the baton of Alexander Rumpf. His solo appearances have included performances at the Beethoven-Haus Bonn, Cologne Philharmonie, Philharmonie Essen, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the Historic Town Hall in Wuppertal, Aarhus Concert Hall and the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam.

Alejandro is a passionate chamber musician. He shares a particularly close musical partnership with his sister Valeria, who is two years younger. They have performed as a piano duo since 2015, winning first prize at the Steinway Piano Competition in Hamburg in 2015, first prize at the Bechstein Foundation Piano Duo Competition in 2016, the German National Competition Jugend musiziert in 2021, and first prize again at the Bechstein Foundation Piano Duo Competition in 2023. Alejandro and Valeria also perform together in violin-and-piano and viola-and-piano formations, winning prizes at the German National Competition Jugend musiziert.

He also greatly enjoys collaborating with other chamber musicians. Recent repertoire has included Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major and Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G minor. He regularly performs with singers, including in Schubert’s Winterreise and Schumann’s Dichterliebe, as well as with clarinettists and violinists.

Alejandro has made numerous television appearances, including alongside Thomas Gottschalk on the programme Little Big Stars. He has been featured in a portrait by WDR on its regional programme Lokalzeit and interviewed on Mexican and Latin American television.
